In order to see our iPIX images in your web browser, you need some software called a Java Virtual Machine. This is because our iPIX images work using a Java based applet.

Early versions of Windows XP (and indeed previous versions of Microsoft's Operating Systems) shipped with the Microsoft Virtual Machine. However, In early 2003, Microsoft lost a legal case against Sun (the people who make Java) and had to stop including the Microsoft Virtual Machine (MSVM) with Windows XP. This means anyone buying a new PC or upgrading their operating system to Windows XP now will not get the MSVM any more. However, it may be that some PC manufacturers will be including Sun's own version of the Virtual Machine on new PC's.

If you do not have a Java Virtual Machine on your PC, don't worry, as you can:

1.     Download the MS Java Virtual Machine from our server ... click here  (it is still permissible to freely distribute this software)

OR

2.    Download Sun's own version, called Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) ... click here (you will then need to click on "Get It Now" and follow the on-screen instructions)

If you would like to know more about the Java issues between Sun and Microsoft that have led to all this, please click here for Microsoft's own perspective.
