Community Agency Counseling

Duquesne University Counselor Education Program offers students an opportunity to complete the Master of Science in Education in School Counseling (with certifications in both elementary and secondary), Community Counseling, or Marriage and Family Therapy. All three areas are offered either on the main Duquesne Campus (Pittsburgh), or on the campus of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

The master's degree program in Counselor Education at Duquesne is one of only a handful of programs that are nationally accredited in Pennsylvania. The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP) approval of the Duquesne program permits graduates to apply for national certification while in the last semester of study; this can save the graduate two years of post master's experience.

The Community Counseling Services program requires a minimum of 60 semester hours. It is designed to prepare persons for careers in a variety of settings, such as drug and alcohol abuse programs, mental health/mental retardation centers, probation/parole officers, residential treatment centers, welfare departments, and rehabilitation institutions. At the completion of the program, graduates will be able to pursue their Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) credentials, allowing them to practice counseling services in the state of Pennsylvania.
