Ongoing Activities

  • Coordinate regional delegation to annual International Leadership Conference at Norham Centre for Leadership Studies at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
  • Coordinate the Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility Program for those already possessing an earned doctorate in education, a companion to the IDPEL program.

Current Projects

  • The Leadership Institute is involved with a demonstration project in the Bedford Area School District regarding application of the Toyota Production System principles to education. Anticipated outcomes are: the development of a demonstration site for the application of systems thinking in education; development of capacity within the School of Education to teach and infuse TPS principles in undergraduate and graduate programs; and research opportunities for SOE faculty regarding program evaluation and design-based research.
  • In November, 2005, the Leadership Institute facilitated the visit of ten headteachers from the Dudley region of the UK to Pittsburgh including the arrangement of school visit hosts so that they can learn more about the US education system. Opportunity for follow-up personnel exchange is anticipated as well as research and practice outcomes.
  • Duquesne University's Leadership Institute facilitated, at the request of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA), a week long educational visit to the United Kingdom, with a focus on the National College for School Leadership (NCSL). Anticipated outcomes include influence on the proposed leadership framework being developed through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and follow up exchange opportunities for school administrators and research collaboration. 
  • On July 11-14, 2005 The Leadership Institute along with The Center for Teaching Excellence hosted the 30 th Annual International Conference on Improving University Teaching (IUT) at Duquesne University.
  • The Leadership Institute is participating in the development of two related statewide initiatives sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The first is developing content for a common leadership framework and the other is related to policy development for proposed leadership centers to be developed across the state – PA Inspired Leadership.
  • Annually co-publishes with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) a thematically based monograph of women leaders’ wisdom from our past, present and future, based on AASA’s annual Women Administrators’ Conference. Leadership Institute Director, Dr. Helen Sobehart, edits the work.
  • Sponsor a series of seminars on Total Leadership and the Strategic Leadership Selection assessment, in collaboration with the PA Leadership Development Center.
  • In collaboration with several local partners and sponsored by the Educational Policy and Leadership Center (ELPC), the Institute for Community Leadership in Education is offered for both current and emerging leaders who wish to increase their awareness regarding important statewide and local educational policy issues.
  • Co-publish with Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA) the PASA Women’s Caucus Monograph.

Completed Projects

  • Facilitated School of Education’s successful competitive application for membership in the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA).
  • In continuing the successful partnership with Oxford University in Great Britain, doctoral students in IDPEL have the opportunity to present at and prepare papers for the NCLS Annual Leadership Conference at St. Peter’s College, Oxford.
  • Received an APEX Consortium grant to perform an Impact Study evaluation of the APEX Teachers Academy.
  • In 2002 and 2003, Duquesne University School of Education Leadership Institute hosted the 14 th and 15 th National Ethnographic and Qualitative Research in Education Conference.
  • Received a Pennsylvania Department of Education Grant for research regarding nationwide programs designed to attract, develop, and/or retain educational leaders.
  • In collaboration with the Education, Policy and Issues Center, and supported through a foundation grant, conducted research entitled “How Effort Matters” to study four elementary schools in Southwestern Pennsylvania that are succeeding despite socioeconomic challenges.
  • In collaboration with Educational Policy and Leadership Center, provided technical assistance and planning structure for Empowerment Districts in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Convened support of other organizations and steering committee of key constituencies from districts.
  • Received a major grant from the Heinz Endowments to support the creation of Professional Development Schools among four school districts in Southwestern Pennsylvania ( Quaker Valley, McKeesport Area, Franklin Regional, Peters Township) and the Duquesne University School of Education.
  • Sponsored Fellow for one year through a foundation grant to coordinate planning of regional School Performance Network.
  • Provided Leadership Initiative in collaboration with Shaler Area School District for school administrators.
  • Co-Sponsored with PA-Educator.net a regional seminar for superintendents, school board presidents and teacher union presidents from eleven counties on effective hiring practices.
  • Facilitated team building with North Allegheny School District administrative staff.
  • Received a grant from the Pennsylvania Leadership Development Center to create a new PA-based assessment and development center.
