The Educational Studies program is a 30-credit
hour program (36 credits with a thesis) that leads
to a Master of Science in Educational Studies
from Duquesne University. The program provides
considerable flexibility for qualified individuals
from a variety of professional backgrounds who
seek professional credentials in education. Although
the program does not lead to additional certifications,
those who have initial certification in Pennsylvania
can earn their permanent teaching certification
and/or satisfy the requirements for continuing
licensure (Act 48). The program has also served
practicing and aspiring educators who live or
work at some distance from the Duquesne campus
through an online degree program offered through
the Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching
and Learning (CASTL). The online program has allowed
educators from outside of Pennsylvania to take
advantage of this innovative program to earn their
degrees. For additional information about the
online master's degree program, click on the CASTL link.
The Educational Studies program can be pursued
traditionally by taking courses on campus. It
can be completed entirely through accredited online
learning experiences without ever attending a
class on campus. The program can also be completed
by combining online learning experiences with
on-campus classes. In whatever configuration,
the program requires a minimum of 12 credits within
Educational Foundations, including one 3-credit
experience in educational research. The remaining
18 credits afford the flexibility to design a
unique course of study. If the online option is
chosen, the electives can be used to establish
a unique area of concentration that can be transcripted.

Studies program and the options and flexibility
