Duquesne University Hosts Book Talk with Author of ‘Lady in Red,’ Portrait of Nancy Reagan

Free event on April 26 is only public program scheduled in Pittsburgh

Duquesne University’s School of Law and Honors College will host alumna Sheila Tate, former press secretary and confidante to first lady Nancy Reagan, for a book talk and reception on Thursday, April 26, at 4 p.m. in the School of Law. An Afternoon with Sheila Tate is free and open to the public.

A 1964 graduate of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, Tate will discuss her new book, Lady in Red: An Intimate Portrait of Nancy Reagan, recently released by Penguin Random House.

In the book,Tate provides behind-the-scenes stories and iconic images of Reagan, for whom she served as press secretary from 1981-1985. She also shares a look into Reagan’s personal life as the president’s wife, including her daily routines and travels.

After leaving the White House staff, Tate co-founded the Washington, D.C., public relations firm Powell Tate. She also served as press secretary to George H. W. Bush during his successful campaign for the presidency in 1988 and for his transition.

“We are honored to welcome Sheila Tate back home to her alma mater for this exciting book event,” said President Ken Gormley.  “Sheila played an historic role in the Reagan presidency as the spokesperson, press secretary, and close confidante of first lady Nancy Reagan, during a transformational period in American history.  Her book will stand as the definitive work of one of the most beloved first ladies ever to occupy the White House.”

Tate will share photos from the book during the program. A reception for all guests will follow the event at 5 p.m. in the law school’s 4th floor faculty lounge, during which Tate’s book will be available for purchase (at the special price of $25) and signing by the author. The Duquesne program marks Tate’s only public event in Pittsburgh. Registration is suggested.
