The Teacher Education Council (TEC) at Duquesne
University is a committee that shall have oversight
responsibility with respect to accreditation of
teacher education while establishing formal linkages
among the various components of the Education
Unit. At Duquesne University, the components of
the Education Unit include: the Schools of Education,
Health Science, Music, Natural and Environmental
Science, the College of Arts and cooperating districts
from basic education.
The TEC will be primarily focused on the instructional
certification areas that have Pennsylvania Department
of Education program approvals. These certification
areas currently include: early childhood, elementary,
secondary content areas, reading, speech and language
pathology, music, and special education. The TEC
shall be formed under the auspices of the Academic
Vice President of the University and will review
and comment on all matters pertaining to the accreditation
and program approval processes for the instructional
certification teacher preparation curricula and
programs at Duquesne University. The members of
the TEC will serve to encourage improvement of
teacher preparation at Duquesne University and
facilitate communication among the basic education
representatives, the arts and sciences faculties
and the teacher education faculty.
The membership of the Teacher Education Council
shall be comprised of the following:

1. The
chairs of the three departments in the School
of Education;
2. The Director of the Leading Teacher Program;
3. The coordinators of the Early Childhood
Education, Elementary Education, Secondary
Education, and Special Education programs;
4. The Director of the Office of Educational
Services;
5. The Director of the Office of Accreditation
Services;
6. The Coordinator for Assessment and Evaluation
Services; and
7. The coordinator for Professional Development
Schools (PDS).

Basic
Education |
At least one practicing
teacher from each instructional certification
area and at least one School Superintendent.

Specifically, the Council on Teacher Education
performs the following functions:
1) The council insures compliance of teacher
education programs at Duquesne University in accord
with standards established by relevant professional
organizations.
2) The council facilitates inter-college collaboration
and the transmission of needed information to
the various components of the Education Unit.
3) The council reviews and responds to the program
curricula as it is related to the Education Unit’s
Conceptual Framework for the preparation of future
teachers and makes commendations and recommendations
for revision or improvement to the Provost by
way of the Dean of the School of Education.
4) The council reviews and responds to data from
the Unit Assessment System and makes commendations
and recommendations for revision or improvement
to the Provost by way of the Dean of the School
of Education.
In order to achieve the functions of the TEC,
the members will become familiar with the mission
and vision of the Education Unit. In addition,
the members will understand the Education Unit’s
conceptual framework and assessment system for
the preparation of future teachers. The Council
will establish an Executive Committee whose duty
will be to review materials and make preparations
for general meetings. The Executive Committee
meets regularly, as necessary, to facilitate the
collaboration among the constituents of the Education
Unit. The Teacher Education Council as a whole
will meet on a quarterly basis.
